Names In The News
Harry Potter - 07/21/2007
Authors, playwrights and actors have long realized the importance of naming characters with care and insight. Perhaps not many have consciously keyed into the subliminal factors that create "personality," but certainly the most successful book, screen and stage characters have been blessed by the benefits of a name attuned energetically to the role being played. The name Forrest for instance brings a sensitive, gentle quality to the personality and thus, this first name is an excellent choice for the Forrest Gump character. The name Spiderman generates a strongly generous and humanitarian quality and so is highly appropriate for a character doing good and fighting evil.

J.K. Rowling in chosing the name Harry Potter for her now well-beloved character, followed in the footsteps of other attuned authors by making a great decision on a winning moniker. The first name Harry is all about independence, self-sufficient survival skills... as well as spiritual in-touchness. So a young boy attempting to survive amidst personal loss, while dealing with his wizard abilities could not have asked for a better name. And the full name Harry Potter establishes charisma, sensitivity and a desire to combine efforts with others. J.K. may not have studied the science of naming, but she certainly was able to intuitively use the energy of names to fuel her wonderful Harry Potter personality.
Henry Joins Julia and Danny! - 06/20/2007
Little Henry Daniel Moder recently joined mom Julia Roberts and dad Danny. And while the name Henry has not been all that popular in recent years (it was 95th for 2006 on the U.S. Social Security's popularity list), there have been a multitude of famous Henrys throughout history. Consider Henry Kissinger, Henry Fonda, Henry Aaron, Henry David Thoreau, Henry Ford, Henry Winkler, Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, Henry Mancini, Henry Moore and even Henry VIII.

Now the question is, should new parents follow in the footsteps of Julia and Danny, adopting this name for their babies? As is readily evident in looking at the list of famous Henrys, this is a name that boosts any innate potential with regard to the arts, acting, writing and even politics. But it is a name that establishes a relentlessly restless interior while also bringing lots of challenges in the relationship department. (Just ask Anne Boleyn or Henry Fonda's four wives.)

So before putting this moniker on a little one's birth certificate, be sure you are open to having a musician or actor in the family. And also be sure you can teach your child the nuances of healthy relating. Stay clear of this name if there is a history of addiction or hyperactivity in the family.

As for Henry Daniel Moder, he could not have been given a more complementary name to carry on his mom's or dad's legacy in front of or behind the camera!
Virginia Tech Killer - 04/19/2007
Virginia Tech killer Seung-Hui Cho (in Korean the first name is generally said last, and thus the name Cho Seung-Hui in the media) was born with an innate personality meant to challenge the status quo. Possessing high levels of emotional adrenaline and restlessness, he would feel the urge to change the world. He also innately possessed the capability to disconnect from compassion in order to coldly pursue his goals. When restlessness and an emotional disconnect combine, there is the potential for tragedy. In order to realize his best qualities, this young man was greatly in need of grounding and balance. His name could have provided a welcome dose of each, but that was not to be in the name elements he used. Mr. Cho's first name provided even more of the restless adrenaline present in his innate nature. All through his life he likely wanted to belong, while at the same time wanted to be left alone. The name Seung-Hui will encourage many highs and lows, with emotions that threaten instability every moment. Then, the full name of Seung-Hui Cho restricts all that energy... nudging the name bearer to do great things while inhibiting the ability to do so with ease. Mr. Cho indeed had a name that stirred a reactive temper and intense moodiness while repressing the expression of those feelings. He would have sensed daily that he was a bit like a time bomb ready to go off at any moment. Mr. Cho's profile provides a ready example of just how important it is to determine the best possible name to complement a personality. When immigrating to the US from Korea, this young boy's name was translated from Korean characters to the English alphabet. A little tweak in that translation could have offered more positive support to an individual who was already troubled and on a tenuous path.
Anna Nicole Smith - 02/12/2007
Born Vickie Lynn Hogan, Anna Nicole was early on given the nickname Nikki. Of course her formal full name, even though seldom used, provided hint of a tumultuous future. "Vickie" for instance, put her in the fast lane, establishing a rebellious streak, while the middle name "Lynn" heaped on the sensitivity and emotion. And the full name established a desire to be in the spotlight. So when that birth certificate was signed, the die was cast, and the nickname "Nikki" served only to add lots of instability and potential for loss into an already unstable mix. Marrying at the age of 17, Nikki adopted a new surname in Smith, and briefly her name influence settled down a bit. But before long, "Anna Nicole" replaced the former first name and this young woman unknowingly took on a name vibration that added potential victimhood into her already difficult vibration. As Anna Nicole Smith, "Nikki" carried a moniker that demanded more conscious growth and awareness in her life. Without such growth and awareness, this name will likely attract unfortunate drama. In the end, it mattered not how much money she acquired, how many lovers she had nor how many moments in the spotlight... discontent reigned. Anna Nicole Smith never seemed to discover the deeper levels of herself. And with name components that demand depth or provide consequence, "Nikki Smith" found loss to be her legacy. A name change later in life can indeed be an opportunity to start over. But it is important to choose a new name that offers support for the innate aspects of the personality. In the name "Anna Nicole Smith" we find a propensity to trial, tribulation and loss... and a reason for all of us to learn more about the sacred potential of our own names!
The Destiny of Betty Ford - 12/31/2006
Betty Ford was born Elizabeth Ann Bloomer on April 8, 1918. Birthdate and birth name suggest that this is a person meant to make a difference in the lives of others through responsible action and tranformational courage. When young Betty married her first husband William Warren, her full name retained a strong call to responsibility and service. And when she subsequently married Gerald shortly after her divorce from Mr. Warren, her full name moved into high energy mode... adding a charged call to action. While the first name Betty stirs huge amounts of adrenaline, impatience and mood swings, it is also a name that gives it's name bearer the role of change maker. So with first name and full name nudging her relentlessly, it is no wonder that this woman encouraged reform wherever she went. Whether speaking out boldly on taboo political issues, disclosing her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment... or talking about her drug/alcohol addiction, Betty Ford never strayed from her destiny as a transformational warrior. This is a person who, from birth was given a strong mission in life. Prodded by both her name and astrological influences, she answered the call no matter what personal sacrifice resulted. Interestingly enough, while 2006 was bound to have been a year of trial and tribulation for Betty Ford, 2007 takes her into a time period of renewed growth and opportunity. It is quite possible that Ms. Ford at age 88, might still have a few important things left to do in her life!
